Bible Women: All Their Words and Why They Matter, by Lindsay Hardin Freeman

Women of the Bible have been trapped in dry and dusty literary caskets for centuries. While a few women, such as Mary, Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary Magdalene, are familiar, many of the women who speak in the Bible have long been ignored. Yet their words are part of God's Word, the Bible, for a reason. Through these women, God spoke, intervened, changed, illustrated, and proclaimed the story of redemption.

In this groundbreaking book, Episcopal priest Lindsay Hardin Freeman identifies every woman who speaks in the Bible, providing their words, context, and historical background. We learn which women speak the most (hint: it's not Mary!) and which books of the Bible have the fewest words from women. We hear the only conversation in the Bible between a mother and daughter (and it's not pretty), the words of a woman who eats her own child, and the triumphant exclamation of a woman telling the world about the risen Christ. Questions at the end of each chapter encourage individual or small-group reflection about what we might learn from each of these women and how God is speaking through them to us.

Step into God's sacred circle of mothers, grandmothers, warriors, prophets, prostitutes, and murderers. You won't come out the same.

Lindsay Hardin Freeman has given a new and fresh voice to the women of the Bible. It is an important work shared at an important time in history. It is helpful to hear again and often for the first time the perspective of these faithful women. A rich resource for prayer, dialogue and conversation!
--The Rt. Rev. Michael Hanley
Bishop, Episcopal Diocese of Oregon

Reading Bible Women is an opportunity to get re-acquainted with not only the stories of biblical woman, but also an opportunity to reflect anew on their words and actions. Included here are some of the most familiar biblical women and, importantly, some of those not frequently the focus of study but introduced here with devotion and respect. An excellent resource for individual and group prayer and reflection.

This book came to me unexpectedly for review at just the right time. Freeman's work catalogues all the women who speak (and a couple who don't) in the Bible. They are listed by name or by identifying characteristic. Each woman has a few pages to herself. For some of these women, (see: Samson's first wife), this may be one of their few glimpses of the sunshine of study and appreciation.

Each entry lists the woman, her prominent traits, where to find her story, a classic moment, and her Biblical profile (high, low, or otherwise). There is a summary of her words, a quick recap of her story, and then some reflections on her life and how she might relate to various areas of modern life. The questions at the end of each short section allow a reader or group to journal, discuss, or think about the woman in question.

Frankly, I loved this book. After my study is over, I hope to use the book for some personal devotional time. It s easy to read, with the information in clear, digestable chunks. The scholarship is well done and accessible.

By looking at the record of the words of Biblical women, we can get a sense of how they are involved in the larger stories. They are not absent. The back of the book has suggested studies using the book, a list of speaking women in order of chattiness, and lists of the books in which the voices of women are not recorded. I highly recommend adding this book to yourself and considering how it could be incorporated into the educational devotional life of the community you serve.

Want to Know About Women in Bible: We Need this Book!
By Sandra Squires
Lovely book and great information! We had the author do a retreat for a multi-state group of Episcopal women in Denver, Colorado, in mid-September right after the book came out. Each participant was given a copy of the book as part of their registration, and I have heard nothing but positives about the book and the experience of hearing the author since then. Some women are using it as a daily meditation book; some are using it as a Bible study.
The author covers all 93 women who speak in the Bible, and structures the information about each woman: the woman's name (if named), where to find her story, the classic moment, what her likely personal characteristics were, how many words she gets in the Bible, and how high or low her profile is in the Bible. The author has narrative sections on each woman: who is she, what did she say, what is her story, things to consider about her, what we might learn from her, and finally some questions for reflection.
The author, who is an Episcopal priest who writes clearly and beautifully, had a small team of people help her do this incredible research, and that story is almost as remarkable as the women we hear from the Bible.

The Sound of Women!
By Charlotte Fairchild
I have a BA and MDiv and I was a hospital chaplain for more than 11 years and I am a published author with books on Amazon. I recommend Bible Women. I expected a 50 page book, since there are only 1.1% of the words in the Bible spoken by women. I was quite happy to find a book nearly 500 pages long. I have personally given away the United Methodist commentary on the Bible because of the superficial treatment of the women in the Bible, so imagine my delight when I read the depth this treatment these women received. The font is readable, the style is great. The Bible study content in the back is wonderful, and perhaps would have been better in the front of the book so that people can dig in without being overwhelmed by reading close to 500 pages.

I am offering the words spoken so people can hear them online for free. God will lead you to these words. Hopefully Bible Women will become a sound book and the women who speak will be heard. Not every woman or man can join a Bible study and hear women speak these words from the Bible. For every man who orders women to not speak in the Bible, the 1.1% voices of women in the Bible refutes the idea women should be silent! Jesus never told women to shut up. He surprised everyone by speaking to women and then listening, healing, empowering women.

Wonderful insights into the women of the Bible and how we can relate to them and what they said! Well organized for use and discussion by women of many ages. Great for church book groups!
Lindsay Hardin Freeman spoke at a recent meeting I attended and captured her audience with her verbal story telling as well! Talented woman!
