An exquisite silver coffeepot in the shape of a locomotive is on its way to Cardiff in the care of the young silversmith, Hugh Kellow. But before he can deliver it a gruesome murder is committed. Inspector Colbeck is confronted all too soon with complications and with no shortage of suspects and he must sift through layers of deceit to find the killer. Commissioned by wealthy ironmaster Clifford Tomkins for his acquisitive wife, who wants it to be the envy of all her friends and enemies, the coffeepot is stolen. When a gruesome murder is committed at the Railway Hotel, Winifred Tomkins is distraught. Caring little for the dead silversmith, all she can think about is her missing treasure. Inspector Colbeck and Sergeant Leeming of the Detective Department are summoned to Wales from London by telegraph and they are soon confronted by some additional crimes. The situation is complicated by the arrival of a famous theatre company and by revelations of illicit liaisons among members of the local high society. Colbeck has to find the killer – before it is too late.

Review
With a final neat twist, on both the professional and personal levels for Colbeck, this novel is an enjoyable addition to a crime series that has an interesting background and always manages to deliver an enthralling whodunit. (Historical Novels Society)

Almost Outsmarted!
By Michael S. Kraus
A silversmith's assistant is given the task of delivering a silver coffeepot shaped like a locomotive to a customer in Cardiff. The assistant is traveling alone on the South Wales Railway. The next day, he is found horribly murdered at the Railway Hotel. And, the silver locomotive is missing.
Once again Inspector Robert Colbeck, the Railway Detective, is on the case. Assisting him, as always, is the intrepid Sergeant Victor Leeming.
As Colbeck and Leeming investigate, they uncover a wonderfully entangled web of clues. In Cardiff, they find several individuals whose lust for silver could lead to robbery and murder. Among the suspects are members of an acting troupe, a professional mistress, and some of Cardiff's well-to-do upper crust. Even the silversmith's son is under suspicion.
With Colbeck and Leeming's hard work and persistence, the culprits are sure to be apprehended. But, just when they seem to have solved the case, the discovery of one important clue forces our investigators to re-examine their conclusions.
Can the Railway Detective one again find the solution to the mystery?
Edward Marston is one of my favorite authors. His prose is enjoyably readable. The pages fly by and, too soon, you've reached the end of another great book.
I highly recommend all of Edward Marston's novels!

I love a good mystery
By Jennifer Kornfeld
I really enjoy Edward marsdens' locomotive mystery series. They are full of interesting history of that period in England. the descriptions of the locomotives seem authentic. the stories are fast paced and contain both excitement and romance. each book is complete in itself- but the whole series is great.

This One Throws Colbeck off the Track
By Grey Wolffe
The celebrated "railway detective" is called to Cardiff in Wales, when a silversmith's assistant is murdered and the silver locomotive that he is delivering to a client is stolen. When in Cardiff, Colbeck meets up with an old friend (Stockdale) who is the Superintendent of Police. With Victor in hand they travel out to Wales to try and solve the mystery of who has the silver locomotive.
There are some unnecessary complications that intrude into the story that revolve around a traveling acting troop. They seem to be there to add bulk to the story and a semi-red herring to the investigation. They do little to bring the story along and seem to be nothing more than dead weight. But Marston is a good author and does his best to keep the story moving along.
This volume of the series, presents Superintendent Tallis in a new light; he is given more of a personality and some of his wooden attitude is done away with. The wrapping up of the story is credible, and for those of us who have been reading the series, a not unexpected occurrence uh occurs.
