About the Author
Alistair MacLean, the son of a Scots minister, was brought up in the Scottish Highlands. In 1941 he joined the Royal Navy. After the war he read English at Glasgow University and became a schoolmaster. The two and a half years he spent aboard a wartime cruiser were to give him the background for HMS Ulysses, his remarkably successful first novel, published in 1955. He is now recognized as one of the outstanding popular writers of the 20th century, the author of 29 worldwide bestsellers, many of which have been filmed.

The 'Black Shrike' aka 'Dark Crusader'
By Foistie
Some may not be aware that 'The Black Shrike' and 'Dark Crusader' are one and the same book, with the title changing when Dark Crusader was released in America as The Black Shrike. Or (my memory...), maybe it was changed when Dark Crusader was issued as a paperback. Either way, this particular novel was written when Alistair MacLean was in top form. It's not a complex story in any way. Simple and straightforward. Funny, sometimes simple is best, especially when It's A.M. doing the writing. Of the numerous books written by Mr. MacLean, the first 2/3rds are the best. Yes, they are written mainly for juveniles, but somehow they work well even when read as an adult (can you say "Harry Potter"?).

James Bond eat your heart out...
By Stuart Creasor
The Dark Crusader is an excellent story of a british secret service agent sent to investigate the disappearance of several high-level scientists. Posing as a scientist, the agent is faced with many obstacles and surprises along the way including an inexperienced colleague posing as his wife and a sudden life or death swim off a hijacked boat.

"You and me and the lights of London"...
By HMS Warspite
"The Dark Crusader", aka "the Black Shrike", was one of Alistair Maclean's earlier novels, published under a pseudonym, when Maclean was still experimenting with his writing style. Nevertheless, it has held up well as an exciting story with the kind of twisting plot that would become his hallmark as a writer.
Bentall, a British physicist seconded for intelligence duties, is an unorthodox hero. As the story opens, he is suddenly recalled to London from a mission involving the theft of information about British missiles. His boss has a new assignment for him that that involves partnering with a female agent, Marie Hopeman, and travel to the South Seas. Neither the female agent nor the travel plans are quite as they seem. The plot becomes even more complicated when Bentall and Hopeman finally arrive at their destination and find a dangerous and ruthless foe after highly classified missile technology.
The novel really has two endings. In one, Bentall must chose between his fellow agent and his mission. In the second, Bentall finally unravels the last details of the plot with his boss. The double ending works extremely well and packs considerable emotional punch.
This novel is highly recommended to fans of Alistair Maclean and to the general reader looking for a good spy story.
