Great Book - I want more by Alexia

This is a fantastic book.

Simon - yeah, he's mostly ruthless, but you don't get to being a billionaire by being a pushover. I enjoyed the fact that he was willing to listen to Helen's proposal and watch him thaw out when confronted by Helen's family and friends, slowly falling for Helen along the way. He's got every reason for being emotionally shut off, which is blatantly clear after Helen and he go to visit his mother.

Helen - I loved her family, particularly her parents when you finally get to meet them. Sunshine and Moonbeam...yeesh. She's fiercely devoted to her company and her work, but then finds a way to give Simon what he needs/wants while sticking to her own guns (so to speak) regarding the use of her patents.

The dark moment of this book was probably one of the most effective ones I've seen. I knew there was something to what Helen does (providing Simon his reason for believing the worst in her), but for the life of me I couldn't figure out how she'd done things to make everyone happy until the story revealed it.

Loved this book all the way from the beginning to the end. Highly recommend reading it!

More Sweet Than Smart

There are some unexpected touches to this book – some good, some bad. For one thing there’s a reason why Helen wears the clothes she does and if sexual assault is a trigger for you, then please be warned. Because of this it was a nice touch to see Helen get her confidence as a woman back, and the way Simon handled things with her was surprisingly considerate and really rather sweet. On the downside everything does go away once they get past a certain point, which was just too convenient for me.

The main reason I picked up this book was because Helen is an engineer and I love a romance novel with a really smart heroine, so I was a little sad we didn’t see much of that side of her. Instead we have a couple of not very productive meetings, a weekend away with Helen’s friends and family, a short stint in New York (where she did a bit of work and impressed people with her brain), then it was to Simon’s home in England to meet his scary Stepford mother. Instead of the focus being on how smart Helen is and how Simon could really use her brains in his business (because surely he would have wanted to acquire her brainpower as much as the patents of the company… except, apparently not, the idiot), this story is more about Helen getting over her teenage trauma and Simon figuring out that love is nice and he is not a robot.

Not that there’s anything wrong with that storyline, I’ve read and enjoyed plenty of them, it’s just not what I expected here. As for the end… well, to be honest, for once I’m actually on Simon’s side. The way Helen handles things is unnecessarily convoluted and foolish, especially considering what she knows about Simon. That she can’t foresee his reaction… well, it kind of serves her right. As for big brother David, there are two parts of this book in which he deserves a thump, one for Helen and one for Simon. The way he does things… not cool. Not cool at all.

In all this is a nice, short read with a sensitive side and a sweet approach to romance. I did expect something a little different, but I still enjoyed this, I just wish a few bits and pieces hadn’t been wrapped up so neatly and I think more than one person should have been apologizing at the end.

What a story!

This is the story of how Simon Lamont fell in love with Helen Winston. First, he buys the company she works for. Her patents alone are worth more than the company. Then, she needs him by her side when she gets devastating news. They become friends quickly.

Helen tells him about her hang ups with men. Since they are friends now, she hopes he can help her get over the past. A few kisses never hurt anyone, right? So what if the bachelor is extremely tall and handsome. Who cares if he has a British accent?

Simon has trust issues of his own from the past. With a few new surprises in the form of his parents - can he learn to trust and love Helen just the way she is?

Helen falls quickly for the amazing man who is helping her get over the past. She hates being the odd man out with all the couples around. Simon meeting her friends turns out to be kismet.

The only immediate blip in the window of their blooming love - the current company she works for and what his company will do with it. She just wants her friends and co-workers to have what's best. They mean a lot to Helen, so she feels she should do right by them. If that means going to New York and talking to his board, then so be it.

Such a clever book full of witty phrases and many surprises along the way! You might want to have this one handy in an eBook!

The format of this "S/S in action" book has changed

The “B-58 Hustler in Action” is a big surprise to me. It is published by Squadron Signal but the inside format is completely different from the earlier S/S in Action books. There are a good number of pictures but no profile drawing and only half a page of “general” description of the B-58. The rest of the books are all pictures (with captions). Unlike earlier “in Action” format, there is no description of any sub-variants. So essentially it is just a picture book. I miss the earlier S/S in action books like the F-105 Thunderchief in Action (#185) and the B-26 Marauder in Action (#210).

I was extremely disappointed in the new format that Squadron has taken

I will echo Yip W.'s post. I was extremely disappointed in the new format that Squadron has taken, which is to make this a picture book rather than one involving pictures that enhance the text. I own over forty 'In Action" books because I am a model builder - mostly fighters and bombers. The older format gave a simplified technical and service history of the plane, which was great for those who were interested in the aircraft, but didn't understand much of the engineering terms. In addition, the older books were replete with comparative drawings of the improvements with each variation; ie., nose cones, ejection seats, rudders, etc. There is hardly any text associated with this book and absolutely no comparative drawings or 3-views. One of the major developments of the B-58 was the capsule ejection seat. There are a few photos of it, but no pictures or drawings on how it worked. I had to go online to have my questions answered.

The upside of the book is that there are many, many color photos, which is fantastic for the modeler. The downside is that if the modeler wants to deviate from the boxed kit (say make a variation), the modeler will need another resource. If Squadron would have combined both formats, color photos with text and sketches, the book would earn five stars from me.

Very nicely done, a must have for any fan of this remarkable aircraft

This book is an excellent addition to my or anyone's library of aviation books covering this remarkable aircraft. At first glance it appeared as just another picture book, light on descriptive text but that is not the case. The pictures are all excellent studies of the Hustler, clear, bright, many in color with detailed captions. I must say, a book about an airplane that first flew almost 60 years ago, that still looks futuristic today and carries an air of mystery about its short operational service life may seem not needed, it is quite the contrary. The more information disclosed about the B-58 the more one sees just how advanced and a technical marvel, not to mention an outstanding strategic weapons system the B-58 was. Many times the B-58 is ignored or overlooked in aviation articles but with this release that is remedied very nicely. Thank you Mr. Doyle.

About the Author
ANDREW WEBB, PhD, is a faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Webb has contributed to many areas of magnetic resonance imaging including developments in radiofrequency coil design, feedback control of thermal processes, techniques for localized spectroscopy, and functional brain mapping. He was awarded a Whitaker Foundation Research Award and a National Science Foundation Career Award in 1997, a Wolfgang-Paul Prize from the Alexander von Humbolt Foundation in 2001, and Xerox and Willett awards for young faculty in 2002. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.

A Review of Some Technology, Not an Imaging Text

This book appears to be a write up of some presentation materials that the author may have given on the topic of medical imaging to general audiences. The text presents a high level overview of the key technologies but fails to follow through in how they are actually implemented.

For example:

CAT imaging is an inverse Fourier transform process that requires some significant mathematical tools which other authors have developed well in their texts over the past thirty years. This text glosses over these issues. In fact there is no clear presentation of the processes, methods, and limitations.

Ultrasound has some complexities beyond the transducers. The images from ultrasound are created by a complex set of mathematical manipulations of the time and spatial signals received back from the sensing pulses. The details of these processes are totally missing from the text.

If you want to get a feeling for how the sensors work at a high level then this is a useful text. If you are seeking to understand how the image processing works then this is clearly not worth the time and money.

It is not clear who the author was writing for. Clearly it was not for the engineer who was attempting to develop such systems. It may have been for the technicians who want a visceral understanding ot the technology.

There is a need for a comprehensive and well written text on methods of medical imaging. Such a text must combine three things. First it must deal with the physical phenomena which are used to sample the tissues. Second, it must clearly and completely articulate the methods for processing the data collected into images. This section must be expansive to include 3D and temporal images. Third the book must detail the limitations of the methods employed. Such a book may likely find a large audience for those who design and develop such systems.

Good overview of imaging techniques

Not sure what the reviewer who gave this book 1 star was using it for, but I've had this textbook for a class before- and it served it's purpose well. It's designed to be a reading supplement for a one semester, introductory 400/500 level course on medical imaging, so it reviews the principles and mathematics behind the 4 major types of medical imaging: x-ray, nuclear, ultrasound, and mri. If you wanted more specialized knowledge on one subject, buy either a textbook specifically on that subject or maybe realize that ~250 9"x6" pages covering all 4 probably isn't going to get into all the subtly you're interested in. Like I said, it's for an introductory imaging class.

This was an excellent book for biomedical imaging. It wasn't difficult to understand, and I found it really helpful. I was using it with a class, and it was probably one of my favorite biomedical books.

About the Author
David C. Howell is a professor emeritus and former chair of the psychology department at the University of Vermont. Professor Howell's primary area of research is in statistics and experimental methods. He is also the author of STATISTICAL METHODS FOR PSYCHOLOGY, currently in an Eighth Edition (Wadsworth Cengage Learning, 2013), and the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF STATISTICS IN BEHAVIOR SCIENCE (2005) with Brian Everitt. Before retiring, he frequently served as consultant to other faculty, both in the psychology department and in departments as disparate as Geology and Animal Sciences, and brings those experiences to this endeavor. Professor Howell's other interests include computing and the World Wide Web, and how technology affects communication, teaching, and research.

I'm a student, so I cannot offer comparison between this author's tome of Statistical Methods and other similar works. I can offer how FRUSTRATING that number of bad answers in the student manual (odds) are. How you can try to work through problems in which the data promised is nowhere to be found (I'm talking to you Ex11.12.dat and all your compadres!). Chapter 7 has several flat out wrong workings to problems. Set me back HOURS AND HOURS trying to work those out and being confused in trying to LEARN from the worked examples. The editors of this book should hang their heads in shame. Expensive book, someone's success in a course, and big errors. Also what appears to be rushed mismatched re-arrangements from the last edition. I'm still looking for a table in chapter 3 or 4...here table...here table...

I actually HIRED a tutor to help me with problems I had worked correctly, but couldn't reconcile with the book...

Beware - if you don't have solid support from your university's professor or a stat's lab...be prepared to google, get supplemental material, and feel confused.

And lesser - follow some problems through so we can compare and learn how to build a complete example from the data. This happens for a section or two, but more would be great. Also, don't offer us massively hard examples (even supplemental) and tell us to hum through what we don't understand...show us relevant problems and make it clear what we should understand based on learnings from the text and what we shouldn't.

students do find this confusing sometimes

generally speaking this is a good book, more on the boundry of graduate texts. I have used this book for ten years in my undergraduate courses, but have two grips. first, the constant flow of "new" editions that are essentially reordering of the same material (undergraduate statistics doesn't change that much) just makes it harder for students to get less expensive used copies (which seems to be the intent behind the constant flow of new editions). second, Howell's attempts to be cute and hip in his examples and wordings often fall flat and students can find them confusing. but I still use the book, perhaps out of laziness on my part.

Strongly recommended text for first year grad students in psychology or as a statistical handbook for behavioral sciences

Having taught undergraduate and graduate level statistics at 4 universities for over 25 years, I HIGHLY recommend this textbook. It is designed for first year graduate students in the social and behavioral sciences and is not suitable for undergraduate students, nor for students needing to learn the detailed mathematical theory underlying modern statistics. Howell has a different text for undergraduates - Fundamental Statistics for the Behavioral Sciences, which I have also used for years in teaching the required course in stats for Psych majors. If all doctoral level graduate students and faculty had a sound grasp of what is taught in this first year graduate level text, reports of data analysis in psychological research would be much better in general. The text includes many good examples of published psychological research, but like ALL stat books it requires great effort on the part of the student. It would be very difficult to cover the material in this text adequately in only one semester. It includes 5 chapters on ANOVA and ANCOVA, a 66 page chapter on multiple regression, a chapter introducing meta-analysis and single case design analysis, and a chapter on nonparametric analysis and introduction to resampling approaches, which will become increasingly used in statistics in the years ahead. I also recommend this text as a desk reference for faculty and other professionals needing a solid statistical general reference source. I thank Dr. David Howell (whom I do not know personally) for providing us such a fine text.
