Grammar Rulz has become the way my students start class every day. It is a fantastic student-led activity for middle-school students because they get to spend the first minutes of class thinking about and looking critically at language. And the students look forward to it as much as I do. This is by far the best daily language program I have ever encountered. I love the fact that I can just project it on the whiteboard, kids can come up and correct it, and then we can instantly click to the next page to check the work. This book/CD-ROM provides brief daily exercises, organized by four six-week units, asking students to find and correct 12 grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors in short selections on historical periods. About the Author
Erik Ortman is a middle-school teacher with more than twelve years of classroom experience. He currently teaches a seventh-grade language arts/social studies blended class and eighth-grade language arts at the American International School in Buenos Aires. Erik has developed and taught language arts and social studies curricula for middle school and has also served as the middle-school language arts department head. He has wide experience integrating language arts with social studies and teaching with technology.

Highly recommended! Aweosme, practical classroom resource!

I use Grammar Rulz with my 7th graders and it is the perfect way to start each class. The students look forward to it, and as a Humanities teacher, I think it's an ideal tool for teaching grammar and conventions in context, not to mention an excellent way to get the students focused and ready to learn.
The students love the fact that they have a concrete number of conventions errors to look for, and that they can come up to either the white board or the SMART board to make the corrections after they have made them on their own papers. And, I love the fact that I can lead in to teaching mini-lessons about rules of punctuation, capitalization and usage. Later, I can connect those same lessons to their own writing.
In addition, each set of lessons is a story filled with elements of high interest for middle schoolers. While studying medieval Europe in Social Studies class, students get a story filled with romance and intrigue about the Middle Ages for their daily grammar work. They love it.
Each lesson takes only a few minutes, but can be expanded as needed to further discuss the rules associated with the lesson of the day. Each lesson also contains a vocabulary word, and a chance to differentiate instruction for students who need a little extra challenge.
In short, I cannot imagine my Language Arts class without this invaluable tool!

Grammar Rulz Rules!

Grammar Rulz is a highly interactive and fun way to learn grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary. It is hard to imagine a more user-friendly and effective way to work on these concepts.
The activity is divided in a series of one page entries or paragraphs, each one needing exactly twelve corrections. Each page is followed by a grammar rule and short exercise directly related to the corrections. The students quickly develop a sense of routine and look forward to it. Since the activity comes with a SMART Board / White Board component, it is highly interactive. The students love to come out to the board and work on the corrections. The activity is envisioned as fun and low-stress, so students look forward to engaging in it. Another feature that I really enjoy is the corrections page which follows each entry. Students enjoy making predictions about the corrections and having a chance to compare their work with the corrections page immediately. The lessons are short, only a few minutes, but can be expanded according to need. They often give me a chance to jump into a mini lesson. Best of all, Grammar Rulz comes with built in assessment and differentiation.
This is a well-designed, effective, and engaging activity. A definite keeper in the intermediate language/humanities classroom!

Great Writing Resource!

The research is clear: If you want kids to learn grammar, teach it in context. That's only one of the strengths of Grammar Rulz!, a book of language exercises that help middle school students master the conventions of writing. The context used - engaging stories set in commonly studied historical periods - fits well at the middle school level, and the exercises can be effectively utilized in both language arts and social studies classrooms.

A unique (and very useful) aspect of this book is the variety of delivery methods available. There's a method for everyone: chalkboard/whiteboard, overhead, and hard copies. The accompanying CD includes files to deliver the exercises via multimedia computer/projector, Mimio interactive systems and SMART boards. Vary your methods and find the one that works best for you and your students.

These fun and efficient exercises benefit all students, but they are particularly helpful to the ESL population. In addition to the clear directions and focused format, the exercises focus on irregular verbs, subject/verb agreement, and common usage issues. Exercises provide rich opportunities for authentic conversations about both language and content.

Life became so easy to live. For every situation such as Self Love, Relationship, Health, Parenting, Money and Business, I would ask a question and the Universe will honor me by answering it and making it right for that moment.

We long to limit ourselves. Yes, we are powerful and we can get what we would like by the law of attraction. But is what we ask really the best for us? Can we even imagine what the Universe/God can offer us if we don’t limit ourselves with restricted and small questions?

Who Knows How It Works? Somehow It Does.

Two things "worried" me about this book. The title and subtitle. Not being terribly religious, I wondered about the Biblical reference, then, when the subtitle seems to be making big, unrealistic promises, I could have easily dismissed the book altogether.

So, so, so happy that I stayed curious.

If you express your desires through a system of questioning - without having to know the answer - the good life shows up. I know. It sounds ridiculous, but I have been putting this system of inquiry to use and things start showing up. I'm at a coffee shop and for 20 minutes the internet refuses to work. I get frustrated, angry, and perturbed at the coffee shop. Eventually, I remembered the whole question thing. So I ask, "What else is possible?" around 3 - 5 times. I wait a minute, preparing to leave because certainly this whole question thing is silly. Before packing up, I attempt to connect again. Instant connection. WTF? Internet connection is one little example of magic I seem to be creating every day. These questions have become a daily part of my life. I'm driving a $37,000 Mercedes Benz with a 620 credit score and $1,000 down. No joke.

I told a friend about one of the questions, "How does it get better than that?" and she was skeptical. She had no other options and it's pretty harmless, so with a roll of her eyes, she started. The house loan she knew she wouldn't get, came through. No matter what is occurring at the time, ask, "How does it get better than that?" If your house burns down, ask, "How does it get better than that?" If your wife leaves you, ask, "How does it get better than that?" It sounds like crazy magic, yet somehow, it works!

What isn't working for you in your life? Where do you feel stuck? This book has a question or two for you to get unstuck and have flow.

Incredibly amazing book. Harry Potter would be proud. AND, it's laughably affordable.

FABULOUS!

I am so glad I picked this up because from the moment I got it and started asking the questions, things have started to shift for me... I got new clients out of no where, just got laid off of my job (which is an answered prayer because I have been feeling like it takes up too much of my time) and am so excited about what can happen next!! how does it get any better than this? thank you Maria for compiling this list of questions... how can you NOT by this book? :)

This book is such a classic. Reading it is almost like a rite of passage for young African AMericans.
I didn't discover it until I was in college (and an elderly female white professor of black lit introduced it to me). Wow! I'm glad she did. But my son read it at age 12. How much better that he's reading Malcolm's
moving story now --rather than late like I did. I believe it will truly affect his life in a very major way.
If I were rich, I'd donate thousands of these books to schools and young folks nationwide.

THE EPILOGUE HAS BEEN OMITTED!!!!

Let me be crystal clear and extremely frank in this review. The Autobiography of Malcolm X is my FAVORITE book and, I believe, one of the most important books written in the 20th Century. There have been many printings of this book and they have had slight alterations throughout their publishing. The original 1965 edition came with photos. There have always been three missing chapters that are still held by a private owner. However, Penguin Modern Classics has reprinted this essential piece of literature anew-WITHOUT THE ORIGINAL EPILOGUE or Ossie Davis' contributions to the work. This means, essentially, THAT THE ASSASSINATION HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM THE BOOK! Reading this version of the book will leave the reader wondering how Malcolm was assassinated, who was responsible and so forth. In addition, the first page of the book is a generalizing synopsis that has the audacity to claim that Malcolm advocated change through the vehicle of violence. Anyone who has read the complete Malcolm X Autobiography in depth knows fully well that this is untrue, an absolute falsity and misrepresentation that can lead to dangerous miscalculations. Omitting the Epilogue, for a topic this serious, is not only censorship, but one must conclude that it was done intentionally. If it was done intentionally, the only real motive could be to mislead a new generation of people trying to learn THE TRUTH about Malcolm. It's a shame that they won't be able to find all of it in his own book!

Time spent on the "to read" shelf: I must have purchased this book in 2001 or 2002, so about 7 or 8 years.

Days spent reading it: 10 days.

Why I read it: During college I wrote a report in my Intro to Islam class about Black Muslims. In writing that report I discovered that Malcolm X started off with a deviant form of Islam, but after his trip to Mecca he began to change his views about Islam and also his views on hating all "white devils." I picked up this book because I was interested in Malcolm X's life after writing that report.

Brief review: Wow. This book was not what I expected at all. Reading this autobiography was more compelling than I could have imagined. I was engaged in Malcolm's life from start to finish. Starting with his street hustler days in Harlem, to his conversion to Islam (as preached by Elijah Muhammad) in prison, to his break with Elijah Muhammad, to his pilgrimage to Mecca, and ending with his assassination, this book was informative and entertaining.

A few things I found most interesting about Malcolm's life. First, Malcolm X was full of hatred for what the "white devil" had done to the black man. He saw injustice, called white men out on it, and sought to fix the situation. While I do not agree with his militant tactics, I respect his unflagging devotion to righting centuries of wrongs. Second, I find his change after his trip to Mecca as completely astonishing. He completely transformed his views. He stopped saying all white men were the devil. He started pointing to the system that oppressed, and that many white men perpetuated. It is a fascinating study to look at how drastically he changed in those last few months of his life. One certainly wonders, if he had not been killed, how his new views would have changed his approach to civil rights. Third, I was impressed by the scope of the story. Malcolm's self commentary on his life ends just a few days before he was killed. Alex Haley does a wonderful job of telling the story about the rest of his life. The account of his death is simply compelling to read. I was hooked to the very end.

I think this was one of the most important books that I have read on my list. I certainly do not agree with many of Malcolm X's views (especially the young, belligerent Malcolm). But by reading this book, I can enter his world. I can understand the pain. I can begin to understand why Malcolm was so passionate about his cause. I can begin to see how important the civil rights movement was for black Americans. And I can see how far we still have to go. We still have racism in America. Even if some of it is hidden, it is still in the American system. I think America has come a long way, but this book challenges me to look deep into my own heart and see if there are prejudices that I need to eliminate. It is not always pretty.

Malcolm X lived a life very different from my own. I am glad that I read his autobiography because it helped me to understand his radically different life more than I did before. I would highly recommend reading this book. It is enlightening and challenging and different than what I expected. Well worth the time it took to read.

Favorite quote: I told him, "What you are telling me is that it isn't the American white man who is a racist, but it's the American political, economic, and social atmosphere that automatically nourishes a racists psychology in the white man." He agreed.

About the Author
Rich Cochrane is a writer and educator. He devises and teaches innovative maths courses for artists at Central Saint Martins, London, and lectures in maths and philosophy at City Lit. He has been commissioned by, among others, the Museum of London to bring cultural history - including maths - to a wider audience. Rich has written books on literature, music and computing and has for many years organized public educational events in public houses and cafes in London. He also spent a decade working in the City, writing software for derivatives trading floors, which is how he discovered that maths was a lot more interesting than it seemed to be at school, and he has degrees in both maths and English literature and a PhD in philosophy.

The secret life of science book writers

This is a book I saw in a book store but didn't buy and here is why. The chapter on the Mercator projection caught my attention because I remembered how incompetently it was presented to us in high school. Some things, it seems, never change. The geometrical projection of a sphere onto a cylinder tangent to it at the equator only has the looks of a Mercator projection; the parallels become magnified as we move toward the poles, while the lines of latitude move more and more toward the poles, just like in a Mercator projection. So expansion is present on both latitude and longitude, but the expansions are not equal, which is the property of the true Mercator projection. Our incompetent geography teacher of 50 years ago, probably had no idea of calculus, which one needs in order to understand the problem. In this book, the author uses the analogy of a light bulb that projects straight light rays in order to map the sphere onto a cylinder. The result is a cylindrical projection but not a Mercator projection. However, the formula at the header of the chapter is the correct one, only the explanation is wrong. I guess it was easier to copy the formula than trying to deduct it. Assuming that the student or the book reader has no knowledge of calculus, is no excuse for trying to fool them with bogus explanations. This way, bad education will never die and it doesn't even seem to be fading away. Two stars since it might stimulate the reader's curiosity.
