Few books on our shelves are pulled more often than mineralogy reference texts. It was thus a great pleasure to dive into a new edition from the classic series Rock-forming Minerals (aka Deer, Howie and Zussman). This particular release, Non-Silicates: Oxides, Hydroxides and Sulphides (volume 5A), is a vastly grown-up second edition of its predecessor of 50 years prior. Authors Bowles, Howie, Vaughan, and Zussman have compiled a comprehensive look at a subset of the mineral classes covered in the original, with the up-to-date version expanded to an impressive 920 pages in length.

The book is well organized and coordinated throughout, with systematic use of abbreviations and symbols tabulated up front for the reader's easy reference. Each chapter is initiated by a table of key optical and physical properties for that mineral, and cited references close the chapter. Both are convenient and useful for the purpose of the reader's further research. The book concludes with an index that is nicely replete with keywords and topics to search out their multiple occurrences. Key data tables and illustrations are carefully selected, well presented, and there when you need them

With respect to value versus cost, one only needs to make the observation that this volume was written by intellectual giants in the mineralogical sciences, well recognized and esteemed experts on this non-silicate subgroup. Though every effort seems to have been made to craft the book in a standardized reference-text form, the insightful perspectives and biases of the authors are tacitly evident. In this regard, and given its 50-year mark, the book is without a doubt a significant milestone. Because of this, I ascribe a higher return on investment relative to other reference books of its kind.

All things considered, I find it easy to recommend this volume to student and professional alike, to those seeking a solid foundation for pursuit of the next 50 years of mineralogical research on these minerals and beyond. --Kevin M. Riveting psychological thriller

This book had me mezmerized. For nights on end I stayed up way past my bed time unable to put it down. This book looked intriguing but that is certainly an understatement. Kitty Sewell has certainly arrived with BLOODPRINT and stands up there with the best writers of psychological fiction.

The book started a little slow for me and then it kicked into gear and never let up. This is one of those stories where giving away more than a little will ruin the shocks and surprises for other readers so I will be brief on that. The novel is a story of two women - Madelaine Frank and Rachel Locklear - whose lives become intertwined at random and then there are unique similarities that bond these very different women. The book starts dramatically with Madelaine loosing her husband to a hurricane in Key West and moving to Bath where she has become a therapist. Rachel has a very troubled marriage and is abused by her husband. She comes to see Madelaine for help in removing herself from her husband for the sake of her son.

These two women are more than believable. They are very rich three dimensional characters with secrets and depth that creates great psychological suspense. All the other characters in each of their lives are just as real. This book will grab you as you care about these characters and are enthalled by the plotline. The author also does the difficult task of making Key West and Bath so real and descriptive that they become characters in their own right. This book also encompasses Cuban sorcery, prostitution, street life, a relationship with a convicted killer and murder. All is believable. This novel would have succeeded had it merely been a psychological profile of these two women and their lives but it goes even further and becomes a full fledged A++ thriller. You will be at the edge of your seat and quickly turning each page with anticipation.

There is much pop fiction in this genre out there. This is in no way pop fiction. Kitty Sewell is a gifted author and this piece of literature rises a level above the genre. Often with these novels the endings can seem a lttle convoluted but here everything rings true. The story here is very complex and very well crafted. There is no disbelief as the story unfolds. If you a a fan of psychological suspense this book is a must for you. So unique and following no standard formula this story with all its sorcery and magic included will enthrall you.

Kitty Sewell is now on my list of favorite authors.

ENTERTAINING AND ENGROSSING

Ms. Sewell has captured her characters on paper with expertise. The story blends the concept of "Santeria" or ritual magic, mental illness and domestic violence with the practicalities of everyday life in such a way as the reader remains `in' the story to the very end. Highly recommended.

Psychological Suspense

Madeline Frank is a psychotherapist who lives in London but yearns for her native America. Madeline lived the majority of her life in Key West Florida but after the death of her husband she decided to return to London where her parents both lived,of course they are divorced, which is common now days. Madeline's mother is very eccentric, she is what people call a "witchy woman"- but in her homeland she is referred to as a "Santeria". Madeline's father is a well known artist whose paintings have earned him great wealth. Madeline's mother is now in an institution,we call it a nursing home, she has long since lost her ability to function on her own. Madeline must face the secrets of her past which are now haunting her, she must also deal with her patients' ,one of which is an imprisoned murderer,another which is somehow familiar yet distant from her. As she deals with her life, her Mothers care and continued loss she must also find the one thing she gave up many years ago,her daughter. Madeline's life is intertwined with with her patients much more than she is aware of.This book would make a really good movie. I enjoyed reading this book although it took me a little while to get caught up in it. There was a few surprises between the pages. Even Madelines poor decrepit mother is full of surprises.

I think of this book can be something like "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Communicator." That is in no way trying to compare the classic "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People" by Stephen Covey, but this is what comes to my mind.

This book is an essential for all those wanting to be better communicator. Like the title says, it does go right into the 7 skills needed to have effective communication. SPOILER ALERT: Shouldn't be of any surprise, verbal communication is one of them. When we think of communication, we all associate talking and the words we use; however, if you think that makes up a large portion of it, nothing could be further from the truth, as that is only just one of the small portion of your communication skill this book goes right into.

The remaining 6 communication skills most people don't know about, and this book does a great job of covering them all with plenty of examples of them in action for you to replicate.

If you're struggling with communication, this book is your bible. If you're already good at one area, this book will take your communication skills to the next level, once you master all 7 components.

Learned a lot about how to improve my communication skills

Communication skills have never been a strong point of mine. My thoughts tend to get lost in translation and I'm left wondering why no one seems to get the point I'm trying to make. This has caused problems at work on more than one occasion in the past, and it's an area I've been trying to improve on lately. A friend recommended this book to me and I have to admit, it has opened my eyes to several reasons why my communication skills are sorely lacking.

After reading it I've recognized several areas I need to focus on, mainly slowing down and paying more attention to speaking clearly, but also my verbal etiquette which is something I'd never considered. The emphasis on being a better listener surprised me, but now I understand that it's another big area I need to work on. But probably the most important section was on how to get people to really like you, which initially I wanted to ignore... I'm their boss, I don't care if they like me as long as they do what I tell them to do, right? Except I should care, and after reading and re-reading that section I understand why it's important and what I need to do to make it happen.

It won't happen overnight, but after reading through this several times I feel a lot more confident about my ability to improve my communication skills, which will result in me being a better boss and probably a better friend as well.

It's great to know that we can actually improve our communication skills with our personal, family, and business interactions/relationships.

I've always struggled communicating on a friendly basis with others but have gotten better over the years.

There are some great concepts in this book that can really help turn regular communication into effective communication.

I would recommend it to anyone trying to improve their communication skills.

About the Author
N. Thomas H�kansson is Professor of Rural Development at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences. He has done extensive field and archival research on the emergence and maintenance of irrigation and permanent agriculture in pre-colonial and colonial Kenya and Tanzania.

Mats Widgren is Professor of Geography at Stockholm University. He has researched landscape history from a social science perspective in Sweden, Botswana, Kenya, South Africa, and in a global context. He is co-author of Islands of Intensive Agriculture (Ohio University Press 2004)

Valuable resource on traditional landscape management

Landesque capital is a term coined by Amartya Sen, to refer to major modifications in the land (fixed capital in the form of land modification). This book deals with such modifications in traditional societies. Terracing as in Luzon and east Africa, irrigation systems and canals, and constructed wet-fields such as rice paddies and taro fields are the main forms discussed here. Kathleen Morrison notes that such large-scale, heavy-labor developments grade imperceptibly into ordinary field creation and ultimately into the alteration of the soil by farming. And of course the line between "land" and "capital" is deliberately blurred here, if not downright obliterated. So we are dealing with a fuzzy set--a concept with no firm boiundary. It grades into more ordinary classifications of land.
What are important in these studies are the attention to ethnographic context and to detailed histories. Landesque capital flourishes within historical ecology. All these major landscape modifications required a lot of time to build, and have to be maintained indefinitely. Some terracing systems are quite young (the Luzon ones did not take off till 400 years ago), but others are thousands of years old.
Many, if not all, these systems were started and developed for ritual, ceremonial, or status reasons. Many produced commodities for trade. It is possible that some major, difficult landscape modifications were purely for subsistence, but apparently not common. People need a stronger set of motives.
Having studied or observed systems like this in China, Indonesia and Peru, I find this book a very valuable resource. I would recommend that everyone read it with Google Maps or some comparable software loaded and at the ready. I sought out the sites (at least the ones I didn't know) on Google Maps to get a sense of what the terraces and canals looked like on the ground, and found this extremely helpful in understanding.

ANOTHER TOTALLY DISAPPOINTING BOOK

SO SAD..Seems to me that Nicky Epstein (who at her best is my very favorite designer) has totally blown this volume...not one imaginative design maybe except for one I thought she had used before. I really do not understand how this lady can do 5 star work and 0 star work...I feel that this book is insulting to her fans. I own about everything she has written and the variation is enormous. Just a warning to others....
