A great, wholesome biochemistry textbook

Let me start out by stating that I am taking auto-tutorial biochemistry at my university. The book is essential to the course. We don't have a professor per se, but rather a test center and some online materials. I am so glad this was the book recommended for use. I did not do so well in organic chemistry. I certainly passed, but the concepts did not stick. This book explains the principles of biochemistry extremely clearly. It reinforces these principles over and over. The order is excellent. While most books immediately lay down foundations and work up, this book goes beyond. It lays the foundations, builds a layer, reinforces the existing foundation, builds another layer, and reinforces any cracks or holes that may have popped up in the foundation once more. The illustrations are clear. If you don't get Figure X-1, then Figure X-2 will likely clear things up for you. Each figure is clearly explained. All angles are approached. There are no holes for students to fall through and miss something, doomed to be completely clueless for the rest of the semester. A lot of textbooks have a habit of leaving traps in the forms of missed concepts, ideas that were not thoroughly explained, and when there is a hole in the foundation, the rest of the semester becomes swiss cheese. If you don't understand nucleophilic attack in organic chemistry, you will probably not understand SN1 or SN2 reactions, and if you don't understand resonance structures, you will not understand aromaticity. In this text, there is no swiss cheese. You will learn and understand biochemistry. You will read along and understand. Key terms are bolded. Figures are given in red text and explained in clear captions. Real-life important examples are given to help reinforce material. You don't have to do a hundred unit problems to reach the next level of understanding; they actually are there to reinforce, and it's actually more like ten problems. The text itself is enough to get an understanding of the principles. I recommend the study guide as well. It asks a lot of questions as you go along and can help diagnose where you've gone wrong if you don't understand something, if you somehow get to that point. I also don't understand why people are rating the quality of the binding. It is a textbook. Textbooks are expensive. You can use this heavy beast to smash a car in half if you wanted to, or stop a train that is in peril of running off a track. What is important is that you are going to learn your biochemistry principles whether you are an excellent student (who reads all the extra stuff on sickle-cell anemia and Alzheimers) or a poor student (who will appreciate idiot-proof figures and reinforcements of previous key principles). Marc Loudon and other big textbook writers should take note.

tl;dr: This is a great textbook for people who want to learn what they need to learn about biochemistry, especially in the first try, without much help.

Media components and study guide not yet released.

My instructor asked us to purchase the new edition. I would have purchased the 5th edition instead if I had known that the publisher has not yet released the Media and supplements that were described in the Preface of the book (I looked at a copy at the school bookstore. Dont buy this edition if you were planning on taking full advantage of online quizes, animations, etc. like I was, because they are not available for this edition and there is no release date so far.
The book itself seems to be well written, so far, but I cant justify the cost without any media features.

This book is excellent for college level biochemistry

I actually really enjoy reading this book while taking my biochemistry course in college. It explains difficult concepts very well and the diagrams/figures are awesome for understanding different biochemical processes such as glycolysis.

Good but don't use as ONLY source of CK prep

Hey everyone! I found it easy to read and very helpful specially for Internal Medicine. My advice for all of you having 8 weeks for reviewing is to go over Kaplan Lecture Notes, supplement with Master the boards 2 CK strongly for Internal Medicine, then use Master the boards 3 for all other areas of specialty; Peds, OBGYN, Surgery ect and go back to First Aid for STEP 1, yes First aid for step 1 ONLY for Bio-statistics, Ethics and such topics.

In general Master the boards Step 2CK is a great addition to your overall weapons in getting ready for Step 2 CK but don't rely on it solely. Also be aware that you MUST get a question bank (my choice, USMLE world) and DO ALL THE QUESTIONS, timed, random and closer to the big day, do at least 2 simulated full length tests taking the breaks as if you were in the real exam. Believe me, endurance and physical training is also a part of the prep. Also try to do at least 2-3 NBME Tests.

So, get your study books together and BEGIN! Don't forget DO ALL THE QUESTION BANK !!! TIMED, RANDOM, TAKE NOTES OF WHAT YOU NEED TO REVIEW AND NAIL IT !!!

Dubious reviews!!

In 24 hours there have been 5 new 5 star reviews by people that have reviewed nothing else. This has made me really doubt this product and the integrity of Dr. Fischer. It looks easy to read on first glance but I noticed fairly quickly that there are a lot of things missing (like for starters, all of biostats). I just randomly wanted to look up DVT/PE prophylaxis in pregnancy (a common ob topic) to see if it would be different than non-pregnant (as in DO NOT USE WARFARIN)... and it does not make any mention of this. Bottom line, be vary careful in solely relying on this book and the reviews on amazon for it.

Agree with previous reviews questioning integrity of the 5 stars, this is a useless book

Like all things on amazon, i buy items based on reviews. I was surprised this book had better reviews than First Aid, as I lived by first aid for Step 1 and its many other clerkship-specific books. Regardless, I figured it was worth a shot.

This book is useless because it serves no purpose for step2 studying. It's lacking in all areas. It's brevity on topics makes me question what they were thinking when it was composed. I often couldn't find supplemental info on drugs, syndromes and diseases i found difficult on uworld. On top of that, a lot of the information it did have was extremely obvious or just plain silly. For ex, a box on one page said, in response to uterine atony, "a = without, tony = tone." Wow! Or, may favorite, "uterine rupture means there's a whole in the uterus." OH my, now it makes sense! Thanks for clarifying. It also lacks useful memorization tools that First Aid offers.

Overall, I'm very disappointed with this book. I stopped using it after a few weeks. Based on my scores in school, I can unequivocally say this book will not help you master anything.

A Delightful Read Indeed

Professor Peter Kreeft presents the arguments on both sides of the abortion debate through the interaction of Socrates with 3 pro-choice advocates, one an abortion doctor, another an ethicist, and the last a psychologist. By use of the Socratic method, a form of cross-examination commonly used by law professors, Socrates grills each of his opponents on the various issues involved in the abortion debate. Socrates, of course, is pro-life and subjects each of his pro-choice opponents to merciless debate. The logic he employs is extremely compelling, so much so that abortion doctor, ethicist and psychologist end up agreeing with him on many points.

The main issue which all arguments return to is whether the fetus is a human being or person. If the fetus is a human being or person, then abortion is murder. None of Socrates opponents are willing to concede the personhood of the fetus, despite the effectiveness of Socrates arguments. The most that they would concede was that they did not know whether the fetus was a person, although Socrates succeeds in convincing the abortion doctor to admit the folly of killing the fetus when one does not know whether or not the fetus is a human being or person.

Professor Kreeft's dramatic play was fast paced and riveting. Both pro-life and pro-choice advocates would benefit by delving into this masterpiece. Every page provides thought-compelling and irresistible reading.

Even better thirty years later!!

I first stumbled on this gem in the mid 80s at Calvin College. It was right around the time my firstborn was conceived thus my keen interest in the topic. I must say the presentation is as powerful today as it was then.

Dr. Kreeft makes the details of the arguments for both sides a bit more approachable by embedding them in an imaginary dialogue. It is witty and entertaining and though I am no expert on philosophy it seems to effectively demonstrate the ability of Socratic logic to strip away pretense, false premise and emotionalism.

Of course post-modern philosophy has proclaimed reason and truth "dead" and such thinking renders the logic in this thin volume nearly worthless. Nonetheless there may still be a few jolly souls that would enjoy trying to poke holes in Dr. Kreeft's dialogues. I would actually welcome such an effort, but haven't found any to date. Feel free to enlighten me if you have seen anyone challenge this imaginary Socrates' way of thinking and provide convincing counter arguments. I'd really like to be challenged by such a response or engage such a person in some friendly dialogue over a drink or two!

Very well-written.

This, in my opinion, is an excellent work. Even if you don't agree with the conclusions reached here, it still is a good, logical work. It essentially uses Socratic thought to address and challenge pro-abortion thinking.
I didn't expect this, but it really does a nice job of teaching the reader how to have debate, without getting emotional or verbally attacking the other person. The writer sticks very closely to rational thought, and I really appreciated that. I will not be selling this book. It's worth the money, and worth a re-read.
The English is excellent as well. I didn't need a dictionary on-hand, just to understand one sentence :)
