Not familiar with any alternative texts

I bought this set as it was the required text for a networking class I am taking at a community college. However the set up of the book and lab manual seems really good in that someone who is not enrolled in a class could read the text and do the labs at home in a simple and easy manner. I do not have the willpower to actually do that, but it seems like a great set for "teach yourself" learning and certification.

Buying Experience - The seller and shipping and delivery were great. I had no problems and my items arrived quickly and easily.

70-680 Text portion - (Read most of the chapters 1-6) The text is a little dry. You probably expect this, as it is a certification book, and a "text book" and a computer book, many of which lead to dry texts. However I found other "texts" to be less dry and easier reads. (Such as "Official Ubuntu Server Book" and the "Network+ Guide to Networks") The book includes many sections describing what a process looks like. For example there is a 7 page section on "Performing a Clean Install" which features 12 screenshots and perhaps a page of text. These walk-throughs are certainly helpful, but I feel that they would be more helpful in an appendix, a companion text, online or in the lab manual, when you are actually doing these steps. Because of these walkthroughs, for me, there is no continuity or flow to the chapters, which makes reading difficult.

70-680 Lab Manual portion - (Only gone through lab 5 so far.) So far I have used the lab manual more than the text. I have found it to be fairly thorough with only a couple errors/omissions so far. Before taking this class and buying this book I was already pretty familiar with windows 7 (as well as xp, and comfortable if not knowledgable in the command line.) So I have had no hiccups. There are a few times so far where we are navigating the command line, and my classmates have had trouble. There is not (that I have seen or looked for) a "command line primer" or anything like that. Also some of my classmates are not native Windows users, so things like navigating the explorer, network shares, creating folders and such are foreign to them. So it is not a "everything you need to know to do anything in windows" book. But it is pretty good. It could be more complete, but I understand that the pressure is on to release these texts in a hurry to get the info out there to start testing it.

Error - Lab 4.4 step 6 - syntax is wrong, but in response it spits out correct syntax usage, which is nearly identical to the command you just tried to run. (There is a "/d:" in the book that should just be "d:")

Omission - Lab 5.4, Virtual PC only issue - You need to alter the validation settings for your task sequence. When trying to deploy an image (Lab 5.6 step 4) to my virtualized windows 7 box, the CPU was listed at only 3 or 4 mhz, and this falied the validation check. What our class did was alter Validation settings in the "Validation" group and the "Pre-Install -> New Computer Only -> Validate" sections to set validation CPU mhz to "13". I can't tell you why, or that it is strictly necessary, but for sure our whole class had to alter that setting to get lab 5.6 to complete. (One of our guys googled the issue and found someone who used the value "13" from trial and error I believe)

Offers good "hands-on" experience

What I like about this book is it is very straightforward and walks you through step-by-step how to do things. This is especially important if you plan to support Windows 7 in a business environment. The Microsoft online Virtual Labs (of which an access code comes with the book) are fantastic. You feel like you are actually working on a Windows 7 computer. This is especially important since I don't have access to Windows 7 at home to practice the labs. Because it's a "virtual" windows 7, you also don't have to worry about screwing up your lab computer. If something goes wrong, just restart the lab and try again.

I did have problems getting my labs to start in the beginning but Microsoft's helpdesk were quite helpful and able to fix the problems. They can also remotely connect to your computer (with permission) to fix the problem as well.

In conclusion, this is an excellent book to study for your Certification Exam in 70-680 Windows 7 Configuration. I look forward to passing the test.

These MOAC books are designed to give you the nuts and bolts and much more, and provide a step-by-step process on how to complete tasks and therefore are very worthwhile for newcomers. These books are not exam certification study guides designed to merely pass an exam and get certified but not possess real skills. These are excellent books in compilation with study guides which are directed mainly for exams.

especially it is bad when even a medical dictionary gives more than one ...

Pros:
The author undoubtedly has knowledge in GI Physiology; tries to distinguish between health conditions and pathologies; honestly mentions what is unknown in the field.
Some info is fresh and new and give you to be eager for more knowledge in the GI physiology.
Moreover, rare statement of iatrogenic treatment is mentioned.
Cons:
Many parts bad-phrased: “they”, “it” etc. not strictly defined, so you cannot derive to which part of a sentence or even a paragraph it belongs. Maybe it enough in a frontal lecture supported by live presentation, but in the book such sentences leaves you in ambiguity.
Some expressions also cause confusion: for example on page 226 written “prolonged fasts” , but what it means -6 hours, 24 hours, two days???
My impression the author doesn’t respect her readers: some abbreviations are not defined in the book; especially it is bad when even a medical dictionary gives more than one definition.
A few logical mistakes give cheerless impression, here are a few examples only:

The name of the book is somewhat misleading; the proper name should be” Introduction into Gastrointestinal Physiology”. You cannot derive it from content or Amazon’s preview. Only in the end of the book it is mentioned literally. Had I known that, I wouldn’t have bought it.

About the Author
Jack Hoban served as a U.S. Marine Corps officer and is a long time practitioner of martial arts. He assisted in the creation of the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program and remains a subject matter expert for the program. Hoban has led more than 500 workshops and seminars around the world addressing universities, government and private organizations on ethics and martial arts, including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Chicago Police Department and the New York Police Department (NYPD). He was a longtime associate of the late Robert L. Humphrey, noted conflict resolution specialist and author of “Values for a New Millennium.” Hoban is also a master instructor in the Japanese Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu martial arts system.

The Ethical Nation

When I took Jack Hoban's Warriorship class in New Jersey, I got tossed around a lot practicing throws and being thrown. More profoundly, I heard him talk about his concept of warriorship and the value of life. Jack has now written about his teachings in The Ethical Warrior, Values, Morals and Ethics for Life, Work and Service (RGI Media and Publications, 2012). In a nutshell, he asserts that preservation of life is the ultimate value over all others, a concept that he calls the Life Value. More specifically, he uses the term Dual Life Value meaning the need to balance the caring for both one's own life and the life of others.
Jack is former Marine captain and a black belt in multiple martial arts forms. He was mentored by the late Robert L. Humphrey, a renowned conflict resolution specialist. He also studied for 25 years under Ninjutsu Grand Master Masaaki Hatsumi (1931-present). Hatsumi created the prototype of a new kind of warrior who defends himself and others while protecting the life of the attacker.
In 2001 Jack carried this concept into the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP), which he co-founded. He teaches that the enemy is not to be seen as a subhuman to be defeated but rather as a human being with feelings, a family and an identity: "Our warrior ethics charge us to act differently from insurgents - more respectful of all life - killing only to protect lives and when absolutely necessary." His ideas are summarized in the Warrior's Creed developed by Humphrey:

Wherever I go, everyone is a little bit safer because I am there.
Wherever I am, anyone in need has a friend.
Whenever I return home, everyone is happy I am there.

While I embrace the Ethical Warrior concept, some questions remain in my mind. What are the criteria for "killing only when absolutely necessary?" There is much room to interpret the concept. Does the ethics-based training in MCMAP still turn out killers, just with a more humanistic mindset? Is killing reduced as a result of the MCMAP training? Are we really more respectful of life than a terrorist? We kill a lot of civilians in our wars, even if we declare our intent not to. And what if an Ethical Warrior is thrust into an unethical war? Does he fight anyway or refuse to fight?
The last point leads me to ponder: what if we use the Ethical Warrior as a model for the behavior of an Ethical Nation? How does a policy maker develop an ethical strategy for national defense? Jack gives us some clues:
"Our nuclear security policy is flawed because it is not based on the Dual Life Value." We need to phase nuclear weapons out of existence.
"Don't do something that will knowingly cause collateral damage." Civilians are the greatest casualties in combat and the military plans for an acceptable number that it will kill. If we eliminated all military actions where we knew that some level of civilian killing would occur, that would virtually eliminate all wars.
"Respect is the key to conflict resolution." If we could understand Iran and North Korea as countries seeking their own national defense, rather than viewing them as evil enemies, we would take a very different approach to defending ourselves from them.
"The best way to destroy an enemy is to make him a friend." Jack refers to this quote from Abraham Lincoln. If this view became the driving force behind our national security policy, we would use compassion rather than force to protect ourselves.
The Ethical Warrior dances on the edge of the sword, striving for balance in caring for himself and others. The US as a nation can act the same way. If generals, military planners and the President (as our ultimate Ethical Warrior) were "armed" with this philosophy, emphasis would be placed on prevention of conflict and neutralizing an adversarial country or organization, rather than on bombing and killing as many of the enemy as possible. Imagine if a US President were to say, "Everyone on this planet is a little bit safer because we are here," or "Wherever America is, anyone in need has a friend." That could lead to the end of war, effectively putting Ethical Warriors out of business.

A moral compass and its "true north" that is.

As a police officer, I have spent most of my adult life protecting others. Yet, I wasnt quite sure of why. Jack Hoban's book explained to me why. And, it has helped me to share the way with others.

Being shown the Life Value and how to use it to make decisions in difficult and morally complex situations is invaluable.

But this is not just a philosophical exercise. You will learn how to live out your moral values to become an ethical protector. Who will you protect? Wonderful, readable and very complete

This is a really delightful book that covers every aspect of magnetic levitation -- and then some. It is written in a clear direct and engaging style with a number of charming personal references. It is clear that the author has decades of experience in the field and still delights in the Magic. If you want to gain a complete overview of anything and everything related to magnetic levitation this is a very pleasant book to read.

Entertaining, highly interesting and very informative!

I was a bit nervous when first opening this book, fearing it might be too technical for me to understand. Yet I was intrigued: after all, who wouldn't be curious about levitating frogs, people and trains?

And Livingston has done it again, with another unusually interesting, in-depth book about a fascinating subject. His wealth of knowledge, brilliant sense of humor and vast research makes this a VERY interesting read - five stars!

Not Quite Useful

In every section, just as you think you are about to actually learn some technical aspect of Magnetics, the author simply changes subject. Perhaps the author purposely does this to keep from scaring off the casual reader with hard science.

It could be useful as a review of the history of magnetics and to familiarize yourself with some of the ideas which govern many designs. But if you really want to know "why" and "how' something works, look elsewhere.

If you want to "learn" more, you might try this text book for $4: ISBN-10: 013185089X
It has many colorful examples and, if you care, the hard math.

Far below expectation!!
Extremly expensive for what can provide. The quality of images is very low (and all the book's images are b&w and small, which makes difficult for the reader understand a 2D resistivity profile), the references are weak and have tables out of date and which wrong concepts! It has some interesting subjects but don't recomend purchasing it.
