Hardcore description of how and why molecules move and react
By A Customer
An ideal reference for those intimate with the field of reacting and non-reacting "fluids". This is not a text-book for those faint-of-heart when it comes to mathematics and "techno-babble", but rather a comprehensive treatment of physical properties and interactions that govern gaseous and liquid phase molecules.

"Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids" is unique in its cross-disciplinary approach to each aspect of molecular phenomena. Chemists, Physicists, and Engineers alike will find its content, the corresponding discussions, and at least one of the various approaches to the derivation of each concept invaluable.

Most disciplines have a text that is casually refered to as its "bible". As a physical chemist studying the interactions of high- temperature reacting fluid flows, (a glorified way of saying combustion), I heartily recommend "Molecular Theory of Gases and Liquids" to that status.

A classic!

This classic book on the physical chemistry of gases and liquids is showing its 36+ year age, but it is still the book for an all-encompasing survey of the theory of fluids. ...

Race to The End: Amundsen, Scott, and the Attainment of the South Pole, by Ross D. E. MacPhee

In connection with the world-famous American Museum of Natural History: the gripping true story of the race to the South Pole

A beautifully told, impeccably researched, and stunningly illustrated account of the arduous quest for social advancement, scientific knowledge, recognition, and pride.

A century ago, England's Robert Falcon Scott and Norway’s Roald Amundsen— two explorers with vastly different visions—set out separately for the South Pole. The race between these “ideal antagonists” resulted in grand heroism, bitter tragedy, and the birth and perpetuation of myths that have lingered for generations.

Race to the End takes readers along on each team's trek to Antarctica, and farther to the South Pole—a journey through Earth’s harshest, most unforgiving terrain. MacPhee's piercing insight and keen storytelling illuminates not only the natural, biological, and scientific detail, but also the human and emotional motivation. He helps answer the philosophical question asked of every person who undertakes a dangerous and epic exploration: why did he do it?

These highly illustrated pages feature diary entries; letters from members of the exploration; drawings, paintings, and photographs of the landscape, living quarters, equipment, and methods of transport; as well as never-before-published images of the last items discovered with Scott and his four mates who perished upon their return from the pole mere miles from the warmth and safety of their base camp.

From Booklist
MacPhee is the curator of an exhibit running May 2010–January 2011 at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City about the geographic and scientific exploration of Antarctica; his volume chronicles the continent’s two most celebrated pioneers. Drawing from and synthesizing the literature about Roald Amundsen and Robert Scott and their epic treks to the South Pole a century ago, MacPhee wends his text around a profusion of imagery that should excite both the novice and veteran reader of polar exploration. Photographs from both leaders’ expeditions and present-day studio poses of artifacts enrich MacPhee’s factual rendering of events and, in the case of Scott, his restrained comments on the reasons for Scott’s and his men’s expiration on their return from the pole. If many of Scott’s decisions were questionable, few then and only the churlish since question the heroism that attaches to his fate. An attractive package, this title will answer immediate requests and might provoke deeper interest in MacPhee’s classic sources, such as Amundsen’s South Pole (1912) and Apsley Cherry-Garrard’s Worst Journey in the World (1937). --Gilbert Taylor

Review
To accompany his American Museum of Natural History (AMNH exhibit, Race to the end of the Earth, open May 29 through January 2, 2011, MacPhee (curator, Division of Vertebrate Zoology, AMNH; Primates and Their Relatives in Phylogenetic Perspective) presents Robert Falcon Scott (for the UK) and Norwegian Roald Amundsen’s act to claim first arrival at the South Pole for his nation. Each explorer’s story has been told often before, dissected, and minutely examined owing to the tragedy that befell Scott and his crew on their return trip from the Pole, which Amundsen had reached first. What makes this volume special are the scores of pictures that bring both Scott’s and Amundsen’s stories to life, including heretofore unseen images of Scott’s last camp, an important contribution to polar literature, as well as excellent reproduction of diaries, the British Antarctic Expedition’s newspaper, the South Polar Times, and images of all the important individuals whose fate is inextricably tied to this quest. Race also includes fabulous panoramas taken from a February 22, 1913, edition of The Sphere, which commemorated Scott’s expedition. Gatefolds showing the two expedition routes to the pole are included. VERDICT: Such a cool book; the juxtaposition of these two polar expeditions in photographic detail makes Race a welcome addition to Antarctic literature and a must for adventure, polar, and exploration collections. Highly recommended. -- Library Journal

Objective observation of Scott and Amundsens antarctic explorations
By T. Stone
I have beeb reading various books of polar explorations since childhood. Having recently read South Pole by Amundsen, and The Worst Journey in the World by Cherry-Garrard, I was quite impressed by the objective view this author projected. It is very difficult to imagine what circumstances both explolers had to contend with as well as securing the financing of exploration, it is hard to transcend today's environment and go back to 1910-1912. The photos included provided a view of how cumbersome some of the instruments, wears were compared to today's technology. It was a wonderfully written account of both explorations. I am partial to Amundsen's approach, planning, very thorough and comprehensive, and I am sure that contributed to his winning the competition and more importantly, bringing every member back to the safety of civilizations in the end. Well documente book.

Priceless
By Marc Ranger
Just got the book on publication date (4th May, 2010). I coudn't wait to get my eyes on it, being a student of Antarctic's Heroic era.

I was not dissapointed. Great, powerful work. There are many priceless pictures, never before printed or published for the general public. One set of photographs shows the Scott polar party at the south pole. No words can describe the horror of those photographs. Scott appears more defeated and beat than on the classic South Pole shot where Birdie Bower pulled the string.

Two pictures are particularly disturbing. One shows Uncle Bill Wilson in a very odd manner, surely he is not doing what he appears to be doing. Another shows Titus Oates in the process of dissapearing...Another pictures the same Oates, sitting on the cold snow, utterly defeated, beat, lost, suffering beyond imagining and hopeless.

One other picture shows Amundsen, Shackelton and Robert Peary in New-York, posing for posterity around a globe.

Two IMMORTALS GIANTS and a brutal, immoral and remorseless faker.

For the pictures alone, this book is pure gold.

That book is an absolute must for everybody interested in Antarctica exploration.

A treasure.

To the South Pole
By Frank J. Konopka
This is quite an impressive book published by the American Museum of Natural History in conjunction with their exhibit on the race for the South Pole between Scott and Amundsen.

The story is very well-known, so the book only fills in a lot of things that were minor, but informative. There are photos taken at the time of "the race" and also fairly recently. The text is straightforward and easy to comprehend, and even though you know how it is going to turn out, you find yourself rooting for Scott to not only win the race, but to survive.

The book reveals that the tragedy of Scott's expedition was due, not only to reliance on man hauling as opposed to dog sleds, but a real lack of comprehensive planning on Scott's part before the actual run for the Pole began. Amundsen was more of a meticulous thinker, and he planned everything quite carefully, leaving nothing to chance. His personality was not like Scott's, for he was single-minded and determined to be the first to the Pole, and anyone who disagreed with anything he did was "banished' from the potential Pole team. Scott was more haphazard, even taking an extra man on the final push to the Pole, which strained his meager resources, and quite possibly cost him his life, and the lives of his companions.

In the Edwardian age, heroes who died striving to achieve a goal were often lauded more than technicians who achieved that goal. So it was with Scott and Amundsen, the dead loser admired and remembered, the live winner not appreciated for his great achievement.

This is an excellent "coffee table" book, and I highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in Polar exploration, or just wants to read of men striving greatly against almost overwhelming odds.

“A brainy, twisty, sometimes twisted mystery.”--Gillian Flynn, author of Gone Girl

A man wakes up naked and cold, half-drowned on an abandoned beach…

The only sign of life for miles is an empty BMW. Inside the expensive car he finds clothes that fit perfectly, shoes for his tattered feet, a Rolex, and an auto registration in the name of Daniel Hayes, resident of Malibu, California.

None of it is familiar. How did he get here? Who is he? While he searches for answers, the world searches for him—beginning with the cops who kick in the door of his dingy motel with drawn guns. All he remembers is a woman’s face, so he leaves town in search of her in hopes of uncovering his true identity. But that raises the most chilling question of all…

What will he find when he gets there?

Lee Child Reviews The Two Deaths of Daniel Hayes

A native of England and a former television director, Lee Child lives in New York City, where he is at work on his next thriller, The Affair.

Like any reader, I love my old favorites…but I love new voices too, and I especially love it when a new voice starts to become an old favorite. It doesn’t happen often, but right now it’s happening with Marcus Sakey.

I read his first book pre-publication, and his next four confirmed what I sensed at the start, which was that this guy is the real deal and the complete package. He’s got it all. He writes likes a dream (or a nightmare), he creates characters exactly like people you know (or don’t want to know), he scares you (or makes you laugh), and above all keeps you turning the pages.

But most of all, he does the “what if” thing better than anyone in the business. What if you’ve gone straight for years, and then an old buddy gets out of prison and tries to drag you back? What if you get back from Iraq and find home is worse than the desert? What if you buy a house and find a bag of cash hidden in the floor? Would you keep it? What if you saw a way to steal a bad guy’s money - no harm, no foul? Would you do it?

“What if” questions power a lot of plots, but Sakey is special. He doesn’t just check a box or construct a neat twist for the sake of it. Reading him between the lines, I guarantee he really lives this stuff…he thinks it through and sweats it out, probably for weeks at a time. I can see him, looking around at the things he loves, looking at his house, turning and looking at his wife, asking himself, “What if? What is I had to put all this at risk? Would I? Could I? How would it feel? What would be the effect on me?”

It’s that kind of depth and intelligence and passion and emotion that sets Sakey apart. These are not just clever plots. These are real people with night sweats and wide eyes and everything to lose.

The new book The Two Deaths of Daniel Hayes takes “what if” in a new direction and to new heights. Every writer muses, “What if the reader isn’t sure whether the husband killed his wife, or not? That’s a basic whodunit. But Sakey asks, ‘What if the husband isn’t sure whether he killed his wife, or not? That’s a terrific premise, and it boosts an already–terrific thriller plot into the stratosphere. Add in LA’s easy glitz and glamour, and coast-to-coast chase tension, and a bad guy to die for (or be killed by, and shocks and surprises galore, and you’ve got the kind of story you’ve never read before.

Or, to sum it up in one line, a what-if question of my own: what if Dennis Lehane wrote a Harlan Coben story?

Himmler's Crusade: The Nazi Expedition to Find the Origins of the Aryan Race, by Christopher Hale

The compelling story of a trek across an exotic land–and the sinister consequences

It was an SS mission led by two complex individuals–one who was using the Nazis to pursue his own ends, and one so committed to Nazism that afterward he conducted racial experiments using the skulls of prisoners at Auschwitz. Himmler's Crusade relates the 1938 Nazi expedition through British India to the sacred mountains of Tibet in search of the remnants of the Aryan people, the lost master race. Based on a wide range of previously unused sources, this intriguing book reveals the mission–a pet project of Reichsfuhrer Heinrich Himmler—to be the result of both a bizarre historical fantasy and a strategy to provoke insurgency in British India. Providing rare glimpses into Himmler's SS stronghold, this riveting tale sheds new light on the occult component of the racial theories that obsessed Himmler and his fellow Nazis.

Review
This is a brilliant and incredibly well researched book analyzing a little known, but powerfully important, part of National Socialist history. I picked the book to read because it received such a stellar review by Michael Burleigh, the most renowned international authority on the Third Reich. Immediately, I was entranced by every aspect of Hale's account of an SS-sponsored expedition to Tibet in 1938-39. Hale goes way beyond doing a comprehensive book study of the subject. He actually conducted his own expedition to Tibet, retracing the steps that the SS-sponsored expedition leaders took and interviewing individuals who were either part of the expedition or who were associated with it. For example, throughout the book Hale provides astonishing information from his interviews with Bruno Beger, an anthropologist and SS member who would later be brought to trial and imprisoned for selecting over 100 inmates for "study" at Auschwitz . I would recommend Hale's book for anyone interested in the origins and perpetuation of Nazism. Himmler's Crusade is already a classic in the field. --David Kirk

From the Inside Flap It is a pilgrimage that thousands have taken in search of enlightenment, inner peace, or even sheer adventure. When five officers of the Nazi SS made the arduous journey to Tibet s forbidden city of Lhasa in the winter of 1938, however, the objects of their quest were mysterious, sinister, and, ultimately, deeply malevolent. Under orders from Reichsfhrer Heinrich Himmler, these scientists were to find proof of a bizarre historical fantasy, lay the groundwork for a global political and military strategy, and pinpoint the origins and remnants of the Aryan "master race." Himmler s Crusade tells the riveting tale of one of the most perverse, eccentric, and frightening scientific expeditions in history. Based on a wide range of previously unused sources, including journals, new interviews, and original research in German archives as well as in Tibet, this real life drama combines the highest standards of narrative history with the high adventure and exotic locales of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Central to this chilling tale is the complex and problematic character of Ernst Schfer, the expedition s leader. A serious and extremely competent young zoologist, Schfer was so consumed by ambition that he was eager to become Himmler s protg and to do anything his patron commanded in return for opportunity, fame, and influence at the very highest levels of Nazi power. Though they had their own projects to pursue, Schfer s team spent most of its time in Tibet doing Himmler s bidding, which included sowing the seeds of rebellion, undermining Britain s relationship with the Tibetan ruling class, and confirming Himmler s grotesque theories about the origins of the Aryan race. Part spy thriller, part detective yarn, and all real life adventure, Himmler s Crusade takes you from Himmler s SS stronghold at Wewelsburg Castle, where he inculcated elite SS recruits with the appropriate racial thinking, to the dizzying Himalayan heights, where Schfer and his team examined Tibetan nobles for signs of Aryan ancestry. It asks penetrating questions about the relationship between science and politics and sheds new light on the occult theories that obsessed Himmler and his fellow Nazis. Supplemented with dozens of fascinating photos taken during the expedition, this engagingly told tale provides deep insight into one of the strangest episodes in the tumultuous months just prior to the outbreak of World War II. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. From the Back Cover "As the Indiana Jones films showed, Nazis, new age mumbo jumbo and exotic locations are a formula that works. Christopher Hale s gripping and well researched tale of an SS sponsored scientific mission to Tibet in 1938 39 has the whole shebang: mad occult beliefs, mountains, strange charactors called Bruno or Ernst and stomach churning concentration camp experiments to round things off." The Sunday Times (London) --The Sunday Times (London)

This book looks at a part of the mythology behind the third Reich the belief in the Aryan ideal it's roots and searching for this "truth" were people who believed that the German race was descended from these Aryan super beings not the archetypal National Socialists, but scientist who hitched their stars to the party and Hitler. Himmler believed in the old Norse gods and the occult This book details an expedition financed by National Socialist Germany to find the roots of the Aryan race in Tibet measuring bone structure looking for clues to the birth place of the Aryans A worrying book in that you can see that these expeditions could be spun by politicians to look like adventures, a search for scientific truth and the evidence gathered and interpreted by experts to support policy without question being allowed or anyone who does question being beaten down by the so called evidence an interesting book but not light reading and not entertaining in the sense of amusement --By Timothy Wakefield

A scientific expedition or a sinister mission?

Why would the leader of the Nazi’s dreaded SS, the second-most-powerful man in the Third Reich, send a zoologist, an anthropologist, and several other scientists to Tibet on the eve of war? Himmler’s Crusade tells the bizarre and chilling story one of history’s most perverse, eccentric, and frightening scientific expeditions. Drawing on private journals, new interviews, and original research in German archives as well as in Tibet, author Christopher Hale recreates the events of this sinister expedition, asks penetrating questions about the relationship between science and politics, a nd sheds new light on the occult theories that obsessed Himmler and his fellow Nazis.

Combining the highest standards of narrative history with the high adventure and exotic locales of Raiders of the Lost Ark, Himmler’s Crusade reveals that Himmler had ordered these men to examine Tibetan nobles for signs of Aryan physiology, undermine the British relationship with the ruling class, and sow the seeds of rebellion among the populace. Most strangely, the scientists–all SS officers–were to find scientific proof of a grotesque historical fantasy that was at the center of Himmler’s beliefs about race.

Set against the exquisite backdrop of the majestic Himalayas, this fast-paced and engaging narrative provides new and troubling insight into one of the strangest episodes in the history of science, politics, and war.

A bewildering (written) History Channel documentary
By Adrian
Remember Indiana Jones? Weren't those silly scenes fro "Raiders" quite hilarious, with the Nazis searching for the "Arc of the Covenant"? Well... read this book, and you may not find them so amusing next time around.

Christopher Hale, a BBC documentary producer, really knows how to present and tell a story, no matter how unbelievable and apparently preposterous it may seem at first. After all, what would the Nazis be doing in Tibet in 1938-39, right? Worng! Turns out they were there, and not on a picnic trip: they were actively looking for their Aryan roots, visting the forbidden city of Lhasa, meeting with the current regime (and making the British rather nervous at that), while the new Dalai Lama was being found and brought to Tibet .

The story of Ernst Schfer -who after the war denied any wrongdoing to his allied captors- and his four team-mates makes for an enjoyable and very entertaining reading, while Hale's subtle but precise insights and ocassional humorous remarks all you (the reader) to participate on his unique documentary-producer perspective.

Far from offering his own ideological perspective, Hale limits himself to describing -with his keen ability to look beyond the evident and the superficial- closing up the book with a simple yet well structure "moral" (to give it a name) on the inherent dangers of believeing that myths are essentially harmless: as he's so clearly explained -and history frequently demonstrated- a nation's inherent and underlying beliefs can lead it to far away places.

In summary: if you enjoy cuddling up with a good history book, and don't feel the need to read a doctoral thesis on the occult roots of Nazism (for which Nicholas Goodrich-Clarke is the best path to follow), get a hold of this very well researched and smartly illustrated book (the pictures do tell a whole story here), written from the unmistakeable perspective of a TV-documentaries' producer (you feel like you're watching the documentary on the History Channel). It's an amazing story, proving once again that truth is always far ore incredible than fiction.

Should have been written by a real historian
By A Customer
C. Hale's "Himmler's Crusade" continues the scholarly
and sometimes not-so-scholarly attempt to examine
Nazi esotericism. The Nazi expedition to Tibet is a subject
not often commented on, never by mainstream historians
and infrequently by writers on Nazi mysticism. Unfortunately,
Mr. Hale should have done more research and gotten his facts
correct. He refers to the symbol representing the SS as
a "double thunderbolt." They are not thunderbolts but
double sieg runes, representing the pagan Germanic letter
for victory. Mr. Hale refers to Heinrich Himmler as "by far the best educated of the Nazi leaders.." Himmler had a degree
in agriculture fom Munich Technical College. Paul Joseph Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda, earned a doctorate in philology
from Heildelberg University. Goebbels had a background in many
bodies of knowledge. Himmler's intellectual background and experiences were quite pedesrtian compared to those of Goebbels.
On page 117, Mr. Hale writes " Himmler had rlvals for political power, but he also resented the cultural status of Alfred Rosenberg..." I hardly think this likely. Rosenberg was considered to be the outsider among the leading Nazis. He was a
subject of private jokes. His name seemed to identify him as Jewish. Himmler would not have been threatened by him.
In the sense that this book explores a previously unknown
chapter in Nazi history it is a welcome addition to the modern
historian. However, Hr. Hale should have done a more thorough
job in his research.

Orbiting the Giant Hairball: A Corporate Fool's Guide to Surviving with Grace, by Gordon MacKenzie

Creativity is crucial to business success. But too often, even the most innovative organization quickly becomes a "giant hairball"--a tangled, impenetrable mass of rules, traditions, and systems, all based on what worked in the past--that exercises an inexorable pull into mediocrity. Gordon McKenzie worked at Hallmark Cards for thirty years, many of which he spent inspiring his colleagues to slip the bonds of Corporate Normalcy and rise to orbit--to a mode of dreaming, daring and doing above and beyond the rubber-stamp confines of the administrative mind-set. In his deeply funny book, exuberantly illustrated in full color, he shares the story of his own professional evolution, together with lessons on awakening and fostering creative genius.

Originally self-published and already a business "cult classic", this personally empowering and entertaining look at the intersection between human creativity and the bottom line is now widely available to bookstores. It will be a must-read for any manager looking for new ways to invigorate employees, and any professional who wants to achieve his or her best, most self-expressive, most creative and fulfilling work.

From Booklist
There is no denying the creativity of someone who can persuade one of the 50 largest private companies in the U.S. to create a position for him called "creative paradox," or someone who can convince the accounting department of that same company to write off to the company art collection the purchase of more than a dozen roll-top desks to be used in his "creative lab," or someone who could come up with such a goofy title for a book. MacKenzie worked for the Hallmark greeting card company for 30 years, first as a sketch artist and eventually as an upper-level manager, until he escaped the "hairball" by creating his own niche. A corporate hairball is an entangled pattern of behavior or a mess of bureaucratic procedure that discourages originality and stifles imagination. A consultant for the last seven years, MacKenzie tells what he knows about creativity and what he learned about the creative process in a corporate setting. David Rouse

I LOVE this book!
By P. Lozar
This is far and away THE most delightful book I've bought in a long time. It's stimulating visually as well as intellectually, fun to read, and the chapters are short enough to be assimilated by even the most harried business person. But it's not fluff: the points he makes about education, the way businesses are run, and the continual tension between creativity and corporate inertia, are crucial ones (every manager in every large firm should read Chapter 18, "The Pyramid and the Plum Tree"!). And MacKenzie's recommendations are not, as some critics have argued, applicable only in an "entertainment" industry like greeting cards: in today's fast-paced business world, a company's most important asset is its ability to be flexible and continually come up with new ideas; the "giant hairball" of entrenched structures and organizational habits won't cut it any longer. While I agree that the people who most need to hearken to this book's message are educators, I think it's equally important for business people: even if you've been trained (first by your schools and then by your employers) to stifle your natural creativity and become a good little corporate clone, it's not too late for you to recapture what you started out with. I wish I could rate this 10 stars!

Working Creatively and Effectively Inside the Corporation
By Donald Mitchell
This book deserves more than five stars.
Although I have read many excellent books about nurturing creativity and working creatively in companies, this is the first book I have read where the author has been someone who has done that repeatedly and in a variety of ways. That perspective is uniquely valuable both to those who want to have more creative jobs and those who would like to encourage creativity.
Although the analogies seem far-fetched at first (orbiting the giant hairball means taking a creative tangent and refocusing it to have relevance for the company's purpose), they serve to open your mind to thinking differently about creativity and organizations.
Although the author's key points are not summarized anywhere in the book, you will begin to get a sense of how the ideas connect together. That's useful, because otherwise why should he try to teach us so much? Except in the chapter that deals with them, any of the key observations would have been enough for a whole book on the subject. The overall theme is that our minds are subject to being too quickly anesthetized, rather than stimulated to ground-breaking insights. You'll love the story about hypnotizing hens where he introduces that concept.
One of my favorite stories in the book described when the author was asked to create an introductory course on creativity. The first session was wildly successful. The author then analyzed why it worked and created a more organized version of this course (called Grope). That sesssion didn't work as well. Then he went back to being unstructured (operating at the edge of chaos), and the course worked again. He learned from this the delicate connection between groping and rote. You need more of the former and less of the latter.
Another of my favorite stories related to the joy he experienced when he first started parachuting. But within six months, it was getting to be boring. He could only make it more exciting by taking the parachute off, but that would be suicide. On the other hand, if he never tried something new, he would be vegatating. So we want to stay somewhere between suicide and vegetation for the most effective results.
You will enjoy reading this book because it presents a fresh perspective that will stay with you. The successful point of entry is a story about children. When the author shows children about making sculpture from sheets of steel, he asks them if they are creative. All first graders raise their hands. By sixth grade, no one will say that they are creative. The pressure to be like everyone else makes the creative people want to hide. It just gets worse from there. Everyone who reads that story will remember experiences from childhood where their creativity was actively discouraged by teachers, parents, neighbors and classmates. Such a pity!
Each story is imaginatively illustrated to help you get a sense of a different reality. It also makes the material more accessible to people of all ages.
In addition to reading and changing your own behavior, this book should be shared with young people to reinforce the idea that it is desirable to be creative. This would be a good book to discuss with your coworkers, as well.

Retain Your Soul and Inspire Others in a Corporate World
By MFFunmaker
Great book that will help you retain your creativity and soul as you navigate the corporate world. Applies generally to more than the corporate world, but that is the intended audience. Whatever you do, this book will help you realize and stay true to your true, honest potential, whatever that may be.

It's a quick read. Very well written. Gordon MacKenzie has a lively voice that will keep you engaged and inspired from start to finish.

The Farther Reaches of Human Nature (An Esalen Book), by Abraham H. Maslow

Abraham H. Maslow was one of the foremost spokespersons of humanistic psychology. In The Farthest Reaches of Human Nature, an extension of his classic Toward a Psychology of Being, Maslow explores the complexities of human nature by using both the empirical methods of science and the aesthetics of philosophical inquiry. With essays on biology, synergy, creativity, cognition, self-actualization, and the hierarchy of needs, this posthumous work is a wide-ranging synthesis of Maslow's inspiring and influential ideas.

Many great ideas if you can put yourself in Maslow's world
By Amazon Customer
I purchased this book to explore more insights into Maslow's thinking. Before reading I had only known the basic concepts of Maslow's philosophy e.g. Hierarchy of needs, foundations of humanism. The Farthest Reaches of Human Nature pushed my understanding of Maslow's definition of a self-actualization and offered great insights into values, creativity, and education. It's a wonderful read for anyone who is interested in the topics I mentioned above, especially creativity; he offers a very descriptive and well-defined section in his book. He describes the actual process of creativity what it does to the persons' cognition.
However, he does have some chapters that require your own research in order to follow his writing. Maslow has a way of almost talking to himself in his writing, and he says some things that aren't very easy to pick up on. But don't let that hinder you. There are many enlightening ideas that would give any reader who is interested in psychological well being that little 'head buzz.'

The Farther Reaches of Human Nature
By Duane Fleming
Abraham Maslow's understanding of human values, such as Truth, Goodness, Beauty and Justice rises above all writers I have read. This book is extremely brave and forthright, as it contains Maslow's most insightful notes and they were published by his wife, Bertha, after his death! This is a master work and challenging to the psychological and philosophical and scientific professions. Maslow shows how the human values of being are also FACTS! His work can be scientifically replicated and verified according to the most rigorous scientific methods of the 19th century. Maslow said that education without values is highly destructive and dangerous. So, what are they teaching at Harvard that caused the global financial meltdown which has thrown millions of people out of work? Maslow's work is a classic--a must read--by anyone who cares, loves and wants to advance the forward days of humankind.

A profound, unfinished book
By Andres Jaramillo
This book was unfortunately not finished by Maslow. The first part of the book is a philosophically profound book about human nature, that answered many ontological and epistemological questions for me.
The first part of the book was extremely well written, and it contained truly revolutionary ideas. Most of us think of Maslow's contribution as "the pyramid of the hierarchy of needs", since that is probably what is usually taught about him. But this book is much more than that, and it delves insightfully into the realization of the full human potential, including knowing, perceiving, being, needs, metaneeds, aesthetics, etc.
Because the book is an unedited, unfinished draft of a book, the second part reads like it. It is difficult to enjoy the last half of the book because it reads as the personal notes of a writer planning his essay. Despite its "annotated outline" format, one can still get glimpses of sheer genius in those notes, and it truly is a shame and a loss for our intellectual inheritance that the book wasn't finished. Of course, as unedited notes often do, these contain material that is deleterious to the overall quality of Maslows well-thought ideas. The editors (or perhaps un-editors) failed in this respect.
It is remarkable how timeless, elegant, and structured the first finished part of the book is, in contrast with some of the "culturally dated" second part of the book.
None-the-less, this book is well worth the time to read it. It is a brilliant piece of work, and Maslow is truly one of the great psychologist-philosophers of the 20th century.

talk story

complete up to date vision of communication theories and new perspectives in the field of communication. Although some of the new theories appear to be fillers for ones publishing requirements for tenure and dissertations. As a text book it is comprehensive but it appears that the field of communication studies has become a platform for every new fangle dangled theory ...one built upon another much like a house of cards just waiting for a steady breeze ....over all the text tries to cover all the new ideas being studied in this field. Well organized but some of the newer schools of thought would do well to be on stand by before calling it a theory....
